Blackjack rules: how to play and compare variants

The goal is to beat the dealer without going over 21. You are not competing with the other players. A hand can win with less than 21 if the dealer busts, provided your own hand has not already busted.
Card values and blackjack
Number cards count at face value. A ten, jack, queen or king is worth ten. An ace counts as one or eleven, whichever keeps the hand from busting. Ace and six is soft 17; ten and seven is hard 17.
A natural blackjack is an ace plus a ten-value card in the initial two-card hand. It is different from a three-card 21. Standard rules commonly pay a natural 3:2, but some variants use 6:5 or other payouts. An ace and ten after splitting usually counts as ordinary 21, not a natural.
What the actions mean
- Hit: take another card. Going over 21 loses the hand.
- Stand: keep your current total and end your turn.
- Double: double the chips committed and take exactly one more card, where the rules permit it.
- Split: separate an eligible pair into two hands, committing another equal chip amount. Rules may limit re-splitting, doubling and play after splitting aces.
- Surrender: where offered, give up the hand and lose half the original amount. Late surrender is available only after a dealer-blackjack check.
Insurance is a separate wager offered when the dealer shows an ace. Do not confuse it with surrender or a change to your original hand.
How a hand finishes
After the player acts, the dealer reveals the hidden card and draws according to the dealer rule. If both hands remain below 22, the higher total wins. Equal ordinary totals are a push. Busting loses before the dealer finishes, even if the dealer later busts.
Common rule variations
| Variation | What to check |
|---|---|
| S17 / H17 | Does the dealer stand or hit on soft 17? |
| Single / double / multiple decks | The strategy must match the deck count. |
| European no-hole-card | When is dealer blackjack checked? Are doubles and splits lost? |
| Double after split | Can a split hand be doubled? |
| Surrender | Is it allowed, and before or after the dealer check? |
The label "European blackjack" is not a complete rulebook. It often means the dealer takes no initial hole card, but restrictions and settlement rules differ. Do not use a US peek chart without checking those details.
